Why Choose Dental Hygiene at YSU?

Standards of Excellence: American Dental Association Commission Accredited

One of Only Two Bachelor-Degree Dental Hygiene Programs in the State of Ohio

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH) at YSU is a four-year program offered through The Dr. Madeleine Haggerty Dental Hygiene Program. Students take nine semesters of coursework, including three semesters of basic science and general education before admission into the program.

Youngstown State University’s Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene blends classroom instruction with real clinical experience to prepare you for rewarding careers in private practice, public health, research, and education.

From day one, students gain hands-on training in key skills like conducting patient assessment, electronic record keeping, exposing radiographs, non-surgical periodontal therapy, administering local anesthesia, placing sealants, providing fluoride therapy, and educating patients on oral health.

You’ll learn and practice in our on-campus dental hygiene clinics, where you’ll work with real patients alongside licensed professionals. The clinics include fully equipped dental hygiene operatories, digital and panoramic radiography, sterilization areas, and dedicated support spaces—giving you the tools and environment you need to build confidence and competence.

At the conclusion of the program, students are eligible to take regional and national board examinations. Upon successful completion of these examinations, graduates may apply for licensure to practice dental hygiene in the state of Ohio, as well as many other states.
