Program Overview

Youngstown State University (YSU) offers a rigorous one-year Police Academy Program geared towards preparing students for a career in law enforcement. Through this comprehensive program, students are prepared to take, and pass, the required Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) certification test to become a qualified police officer in the state of Ohio.

Program Overview

The YSU Police Academy Program delivers a curriculum encompassing 33 credit hours of theoretical instruction, hands-on training, and physical conditioning, surpassing the minimum requirements set by OPOTC. Classes are meticulously scheduled from Monday to Friday, 5-10:30 p.m., with some classes also occurring over the weekend. All students are required to attend a mandatory orientation session prior to the semester’s start.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for this program, prospective students must meet the following requirements as established by OPOTC:

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have earned a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Have no felony convictions, including those that have been sealed or expunged.
  • Have no domestic violence convictions.

Physical Standards and Equipment

Physical fitness is a cornerstone of the Police Academy curriculum. Students must meet the OPOTC’s minimum physical conditioning standards, including timed push-ups, sit-ups, a 1.5-mile run, and other agility tests. Failure to meet these standards by the end of the second semester will result in ineligibility to sit for the certification exam.

Students are also required to obtain the following equipment:

  • A firearm and holster.
  • Handcuffs and case.
  • Gun belt.
  • Extra magazines and case.
  • Belt keepers.
  • Flashlight and holder.

For those seeking financial assistance for program costs, further guidance can be sought from the academy commander. Additionally, students with previous Police Academy/Law Enforcement training may be eligible to receive credits towards this degree.

Bureau of Labor and Statistics Data and Job Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment of police and detectives to grow 7% from 2019 to 2029, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The demand for police services to maintain and improve public safety is expected to drive employment growth. As of May 2019, the median annual wage for police and detectives was $65,170.

This program at Youngstown State University not only prepares students to meet and exceed the standards required by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission but also equips them with the knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in law enforcement.
