Red Press Collaborative – Michael Weigman
The 2024 Red Press Collaborative program welcomes Michael Weigman as this year’s guest artist.
Weigman is an artist, printmaker, and educator living in Columbus, Ohio. He received his Master of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University with a focus in printmaking. Much of Weigman’s work explores a personal mythos, combining elements of his suburban upbringing, obsession with history, and fascination with subcultures found in extreme metal music.
Beyond being a practicing artist, Weigman currently manages the print shop Upright Press, is a member at the Columbus Printed Art Center, and is a freelance illustrator. You can learn more about Weigman and see his work at www.michaelweigman.com.
Artist Statement: My work explores fascinations with underground subcultures from my youth and my interest in industrial era history. These two disparate sources clash, creating an abstract mythology used to illustrate my vision of contemporary issues. I employ printmaking as my primary medium due to its legacy as a mass communication device for the working class.
The Red Press Collaborative is an annual event that hosts a celebrated printmaker for one week to work with Department of Art students. During that time, a limited-edition print is created in collaboration between our visiting artist and YSU art students. The final print will be made available for ownership via a donation of $125.
Weigman will work on the publication of his print from 9:30 – 11:30 AM and 1:30 – 3:30 PM each day in room 4025 of Bliss Hall (printmaking studio). He will present a portfolio talk and hold a reception Wednesday, November 6 at 3:30 PM, also in room 4025.
Entry to this event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue Deck (M30) for a $5 fee payable in cash only.
