Inside the Penguin Physical Therapy Clinic

Becoming a physical therapist takes more than learning in the classroom. Students need opportunities to work with patients, apply what they’ve learned, and build confidence in a real clinical setting.

At Youngstown State University (YSU), the Penguin Physical Therapy Clinic gives Doctor of Physical Therapy students hands-on experience while providing personalized care to members of the local community.

Real-World Experience from day one

The Penguin Physical Therapy Clinic gives YSU Doctor of Physical Therapy students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge while working with real patients under faculty supervision. The clinic serves uninsured and underinsured members of the community, allowing students to gain valuable hands-on experience while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

During a patient’s first visit, students complete a comprehensive evaluation by asking questions, assessing strength and range of motion, and identifying areas that need improvement. Using this information, they develop an individualized treatment plan and exercise program tailored to each patient’s needs.

Modern Equipment for personalized care

Throughout the Physical Therapy Clinic, students use a variety of rehabilitation equipment to support each patient’s recovery. Adjustable treatment tables, resistance bands, Swiss balls, ankle weights, stationary bikes, and the NuStep help patients improve strength, mobility, balance, coordination, endurance, and overall function.

The clinic also includes educational tools, such as an anatomical skeleton, that help students explain injuries and conditions to patients while strengthening their understanding of anatomy and movement.

Making a Difference through patient care

At the Penguin Physical Therapy Clinic, students do more than practice clinical skills. They help uninsured and underinsured patients manage pain, improve movement, and return to everyday activities.

The clinic serves individuals with orthopedic and neurological conditions, including patients recovering from strokes or living with Parkinson’s disease.

Each week, student physical therapists work with patients under the supervision of licensed physical therapists, gaining experience while providing an important service to the Youngstown community.

For students, seeing patients make progress can be one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. By listening to patients, guiding them through treatment, and helping them return to daily activities, students learn how physical therapy can make a meaningful difference in a person’s life.

Preparing Future Physical Therapists

The Penguin Physical Therapy Clinic provides more than hands-on learning. It gives students the opportunity to build confidence, strengthen their clinical skills, and make a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Patients describe the clinic as a welcoming place where they feel supported by students and faculty who genuinely care about their progress. Many say the personalized care and encouragement they receive have helped them return to every day activities and improve their quality of life.
