Your Guide to Academic Advising at YSU’s Bitonte College

From your first semester through graduationacademic advising is an important part of your

experience at YSU. At the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, advisors are here to help you navigate your degree, make informed decisions, and stay on track toward your academic and professional goals.

Your Academic Advisor is Here to Support You from Day One

Your advising experience begins at Orientation, where you’ll meet individually with an academic advisor to build your class schedule based on your major, placement scores, previous college credits, work schedule, and other responsibilities.

At BCHHS, academic advising is a team effort. Professional academic advisors and faculty mentors work together to support students throughout their college experience.

Professional academic advisors help students with course selection, registration, academic planning, and degree requirements. As students progress through their program, faculty mentors provide additional career and professional guidance.

How Academic Advising Helps You Navigate Your College Experience

Your academic advisor is there to help you navigate college and stay on track toward your goals. Your advisor can help you:

  • Adjust to college life
  • Understand your degree requirements
  • Choose your courses
  • Track your academic progress
  • Connect with campus resources

Supporting Your Next Steps

Once you earn 60 or more credit hours, you’ll be assigned a faculty mentor – a professor in your field who can help you prepare for your future career.

Your faculty mentor can help you explore career paths, internships, graduate school, networking, and resume development. You’ll continue working with your professional academic advisor for course scheduling, degree planning, and YSU requirements.

Working Together with Your Academic Advisor

Academic advising works best when you take an active role in the process. To make the most of your advising experience:

  • Stay in touch with your advisor
  • Schedule appointments early, especially before registration.
  • Come prepared by reviewing your program information and bringing questions.
  • Communicate openly about your goals, questions and challenges.
  • Stay informed by checking your YSU email.
  • Ask for help early if you’re unsure about a requirement or struggling with a course.

Stay Connected with Your Academic Advisor
