Program Overview

Youngstown State University (YSU) proudly offers a comprehensive Dental Assisting Program designed to prepare students for successful careers in dental assisting. Our program caters to those seeking entry into the dental field, providing hands-on experience and knowledge critical for thriving in various dental office situations, including specialty and general practice, clinics, hospitals, or even service in the armed forces.

Program Overview

The Dental Assisting Program at YSU is structured to provide students with three distinct career pathways in the dental field, enhancing employability in dental offices or clinics. We strongly recommend that our students complete basic science and computer courses prior to enrollment to ensure they are well-prepared for the curriculum ahead.

Prospective students will find application and admissions criteria detailed in the Admissions section of our catalog, guiding them through the process of joining this exciting program.

Curriculum and Certification

Our one-year certificate option introduces students to essential aspects of dental assisting, including dental terminology, dental materials, radiography, and chairside assisting. This rigorous program combines classroom instruction, online learning, and practical experiences in both our state-of-the-art laboratory and in professional dental offices.

Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the National Certification Examination or the Ohio Dental Assistants Examination, earning the prestigious title of Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) and the right to use CDA credentials after their name. To qualify for the national examination, graduates must have completed their education at an accredited institution and hold a current CPR certification.

For CDAs looking to further their education, YSU offers additional second-year courses leading to an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Dental Assisting. This program includes two optional pathways for students: a transfer pathway or an Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) pathway.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the YSU Dental Assisting Program will:

  • Uphold ethical, legal, and professional standards in all facets of their work.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills with patients, dental teams, and other health professionals.
  • Fulfill the requirements to pass both state and national examinations in all clinical areas of dental assisting.
  • Implement proper infection control and ensure personal, clinical, and patient safety in all dental practices.
