Licensure-Eligible: Become a Social Work Assistant

Program Overview

The Associate of Applied Science in Social Work at Youngstown State University is a fully online, two-year asynchronous program designed to prepare students for meaningful careers as social work assistants.

This flexible program equips students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to support Licensed Social Workers in a variety of settings. Graduates are trained to assist with assessment, referral, case management, outreach, prevention services, and community-based programs. The curriculum is built around the nine core competencies of social work practice as outlined by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for the Social Work Assistant (SWA) licensure in states such as Ohio, where registration is available. With licensure, they can begin working in the field under supervision or continue their education by enrolling in a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program — opening the door to advanced licensure and leadership roles in this people-centered profession.
