Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Educational Specialist (Ed.S)

Program Overview

Our program is designed to prepare graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions to serve our community. 

Youngstown State University offers a Master of Education in Intervention Services as the initial degree required for admission to the Educational Specialist in School Psychology program.  The School Psychology program at YSU enrolled its first class of candidates in 2012 and graduated its first class of School Psychologists in August 2015. This is the first new degree program in Ohio dedicated to the preparation of school psychologist in over four decades. Master’s students will find a unique educational experience that prepares them for study in School Psychology.

What You'll Learn in this Program

In the School Psychology program, you’ll work directly with children to assess, evaluate and support their individual learning needs with prevention and intervention strategies. School psychologists partner with family members, teachers and other professionals to address emotional, social, behavioral and academic issues.

The program emphasizes five core areas:

  • Dynamic assessment
  • Consultation and response to intervention
  • Counseling
  • Low- and high-incidence disabilities
  • Role and function of the school psychologist

 

Your courses will provide you with mastery of skills, values, methods of inquiry and applied clinical experiences. This program is designed with a unique emphasis in low-incidence disabilities. You’ll study the current advances in the field of school psychology and education with the most current technology in the field.

Degree Plan

School Psychology EdS

Full completion of the program includes earning a Master of Education in Intervention Services and an EdS in School Psychology.

You’ll complete the program in three years:

  • Year One includes core foundational courses toward the MEd.
  • Year Two focuses on core school psychology courses (residency year).
  • Year Three includes a paid internship in a school setting.

 

There are practicum experiences throughout all three years. Full completion of the program includes earning a Master of Education in Intervention Services and an EdS in School Psychology.

You’ll complete the program in three years:
