The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care (BSRC) at Youngstown State University is a comprehensive, in-person program designed to prepare students for careers as licensed respiratory care practitioners (RCPs). Our program equips students with the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to diagnose, treat, manage, and educate patients with cardiopulmonary disorders. As the only healthcare professionals trained and licensed to operate and manage ventilators and life support systems, respiratory therapists play a vital role in patient care.
A licensed RCP must be knowledgeable in various assessment techniques and patient education models, working with neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients in acute, sub-acute, and home care settings. To effectively contribute as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the RCP must understand:
Students will complete theory-based coursework and laboratory experiences before entering the clinical education phase of the program. The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care can be completed in four years, including three summer sessions. Advanced placement options for a Master of Respiratory Care and a Sleep Diagnostics specialization are also available.
Our 100% online Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care – Degree Advancement allows you to apply your previously earned associate degree in respiratory therapy from a CoARC-accredited institution to this bachelor’s in respiratory care in order to significantly accelerate your path to completion.

Program Goals: The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care program goals are to provide graduates with additional knowledge, skills and attributes in leadership, management, education, research and advanced clinical practice skills to allow the student to meet their current professional goals and prepare them for practice as an advanced degree respiratory therapist.
Note: CoARC accredits respiratory therapy education programs in the United States. To achieve this end, it utilizes an ‘outcomes based’ process. Programmatic outcomes are performance indicators that reflect the extent to which the educational goals of the program are achieved and by which program effectiveness is documented.
