The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care at Youngstown State University is a comprehensive, in-person program designed to prepare students for careers as licensed respiratory care practitioners (RCPs). Our program equips students with the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to diagnose, treat, manage, and educate patients with cardiopulmonary disorders. As the only healthcare professionals trained and licensed to operate and manage ventilators and life support systems, respiratory therapists play a vital role in patient care.
A licensed RCP must be knowledgeable in various assessment techniques and patient education models, working with neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients in acute, sub-acute, and home care settings. To effectively contribute as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the RCP must understand:
The physiological, psychological, and cultural needs of the patient
The role of various therapeutic interventions in the patient care plan
Broad-based skills that enhance overall patient care
Students will complete theory-based coursework and laboratory experiences before entering the clinical education phase of the program. The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care can be completed in four years, including three summer sessions. Advanced placement options for a Master of Respiratory Care and a Sleep Diagnostics specialization are also available.
