Program Overview

The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at Youngstown State University is a full-time, two-and-a-half-year professional program that prepares students to become licensed physical therapists through a blend of academic rigor and hands-on clinical experience.

Students gain a strong foundation in movement science, clinical practice, and evidence-based care—ready to serve in diverse healthcare settings such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, rehab centers, home health, schools, and sports performance facilities.

The curriculum includes classroom and lab instruction followed by immersive clinical rotations that develop real-world skills and professional confidence. This program is ideal for students with a bachelor’s degree in a related field who are committed to improving patient mobility, health, and quality of life in a constantly evolving healthcare environment.

Graduates of YSU’s DPT program are well-prepared to lead in the field and make a lasting difference in the lives of their patients.

At Youngstown State University, our Doctor of Physical Therapy program extends learning far beyond the classroom. Through a variety of community-based experiences, students apply their skills in real-world settings while making a meaningful impact on the health and wellness of the region. From providing pro bono care through the Penguin Physical Therapy Clinic to leading Fall Prevention and Balance Classes for older adults, students gain valuable hands-on experience serving diverse populations. These opportunities strengthen clinical reasoning, communication, and compassion—core values that define YSU-trained physical therapists.

Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
