Program Overview

The Ophthalmic Clinical Assistant program at Youngstown State University prepares students for entry-level careers in ophthalmology and optometry. This undergraduate, post-secondary certificate program combines online coursework with in-person laboratory and clinical training to provide applied, career-ready skills.

The program is delivered through a hybrid instructional model:

  • Online Asynchronous Didactic Coursework: Lecture content delivered online for flexibility and accessibility
  • In-Person Laboratory & Clinical Training: Hands-on instruction in approved healthcare and ophthalmology settings

In-person training will take place at our Clinical Laboratory, located at the new Campbell Health and Community Development Center (CHCDC), 444 Struthers-Coitsville Road, Lowellville, Ohio

This program structure ensures students gain both theoretical knowledge and real-world, hands-on clinical experience.

What Can You Do With an Ophthalmic Clinical Assistant Certificate?

As an ophthalmic assistant, graduates of this program will work under the direction of an ophthalmologist performing diagnostic testing, administering eye drops and collecting data to be interpreted by the physician.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with patient intake, medical history, and education

  • Performing clinical imaging
