Music at Noon – Bryan Helsel and Robin Treybig

For the past ​four decades, residents of Youngstown and the surrounding communities have had the opportunity to experience the combined magic of music and art on Wednesdays, when The Butler Institute of American Art and Dana School of Music and University Theatre present the weekly Music at Noon Series. Surrounded by breathtaking American art in numerous galleries, faculty, students, and guest artists take center stage in The Butler’s Beecher Court, and audience members are treated to selections from multiple genres that range from classical to jazz, world music to contemporary pieces, pop tunes to favorites from The Great American Songbook, and more. The tremendously popular Music at Noon series promises a dynamic and ever-changing program.

Robin is a roster artist with Magisterra Soloists, performing chamber music concerts in London and Toronto, Ontario. As a member of the Holter Music Festival, she performed in a concert tour of Italy to audiences in Sacile, Pordenone, and Trieste. Robin resided in Germany, where she played with the Pfalztheater Opera Orchestra. In the U.S., Robin served for many years as Assistant Principal Cellist of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra in Madison, Wisconsin, and appeared as principal on their recordings, Momentum and Mozart: the Early Concerti. She continues her post as Principal Cellist of the Butler County Symphony Orchestra as well as Interim Principal Cellist of the Youngstown Symphony. Robin recently appeared as a soloist with the Greenville Symphony in a performance of the Haydn C Major Cello Concerto.

Bryan Helsel is Lecturer of Recording Arts at Youngstown State University, where he teaches courses in music technology, DAW lessons, operates the studio and administers the program of students including assisting senior projects and supervising recording internships. He earned his Ph.D. in Music Education from Kent State University, which featured additional emphasis on choral conducting and curriculum design. His research interests include music ensemble travel, music technology, and music literacy. His case study on ensemble tourism was published in the journal Excellence in Performing Arts Research, and he has been published multiple times in the PMEA Journal. He also holds a Master’s degree in piano performance from Duquesne university and bachelor degrees in music education and piano performance from Westminster College. He studied piano under David Allen Wehr and Dr. Nancy Zipay DeSalvo. Conducting teachers have included Dr. Scott MacPherson, Dr. Jerry Blackstone, Dr. James Jordan, Dr. Rollo Dilworth, and Dr. Paul Rardin.

Music at Noon concerts are held each Wednesday that YSU is in session beginning at 12:15 P.M. They are free and open to the public, and free parking is available at the Butler and in other adjacent lots for a minimal cost.
