Program Overview
Are you ready to embark on a rewarding career in the field of biology? Whether your goal is to become a medical professional or work in a major research clinic, our Biology program can launch your journey toward success.
As a Biology major, you’ll explore the fascinating world of life – from humans and animals to plants and bacteria. Delve into how organisms survive and interact within their environments, studying everything from cellular biology to genetics, human physiology, plant and animal diversity, and chemistry. Outside of the classroom, you’ll have unique opportunities to collaborate with faculty on research projects, present at conferences, publish papers, and even prepare for medical school.
We offer pre-professional tracks to help you fulfill the specific requirements for various career paths. Whether your ambitions lie in dentistry, forestry, medicine, osteopathy, or veterinary medicine, our dedicated faculty will guide you toward success.
The BaccMed Program at Youngstown State University prepares students for a career in medicine by offering an enhanced pre-medical curriculum and early assurance to medical schools like Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). The program’s flexible options let students earn a bachelor of science in three or four years, and offers students an accelerated biology and biochemistry pathway, and additional resources like MCAT preparation workshops and scholarship opportunities. The program emphasizes family medicine, general pediatrics, general internal medicine, medical research related to these specialties, and medically underserved communities.
Our Biology students have had the opportunity to intern at esteemed institutions such as Mercy Health, Riverside Methodist Hospital, and Palmer College of Chiropractic. Additionally, our graduates have gone on to work at organizations including Mercy Health, Aronex Pharmaceuticals, and University Hospitals of Cleveland. Through our strong network and partnerships, we ensure that our students have access to valuable internships and job opportunities.
