Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science prepares you to design, implement, and test computing solutions to business, organizational, and everyday life problems. Software engineering, computer architecture, computer programming, operating systems, data structures and algorithms, software development and testing, database design and management, computer networking, and cybersecurity are among the computing concepts and practices embedded into our program. Math as a minor is integrated into the curriculum to better prepare you in computation and logic. Professional careers for our graduates include software engineer, computer programmer software/app developer, IT project manager, data scientist, and QA engineer.

The benefits of Computer Science bachelor’s degree include:

  • The median annual salary of $120,730 for software developers
  • 25% projected job growth for software developers through 2031

The advantages of pursuing a Computer Science bachelor’s degree at YSU include:

  • Multiple terms throughout the year to help you start anytime to complete your degree.
  • Full-time faculty access at any time
  • Full-time faculty coverage of core courses
  • One of the lowest tuition rates in the nation
  • Intensive project-oriented courses

  • Computer Science spans the range from theory through programming to cutting-edge development of computing solutions. Computer Science offers a foundation that permits graduates to adapt to new technologies and new ideas. The work of computer scientists falls into three categories:

      • designing and building software
      • developing effective ways to solve computing problems, such as storing information in databases, sending data over networks, or providing new approaches to security problems
      • devising new and better ways of using computers and addressing particular challenges in areas such as robotics, computer vision, or digital forensics

The Computer Science 4+1 program leads to the degree of Master of Computing and Information Systems. The flexibility of the program allows the student many choices.

This degree may be earned in ten semesters if students average 16 hours per semester during the first 4 years and 11 hours semester during the last year.

    Student Organizations

The STEM community has a variety of student professional organizations that allow you to grow and foster your learning in an environment with those who share the same interests.

Student professional organizations provide opportunities for you to meet experienced professionals, collaborate with students at other universities, or form relationships with colleagues outside the classroom. They provide social, academic, entrepreneurial, and professional networking opportunities.

    Scholarships Available

Each year, thousands of dollars in scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Scholarships come from a variety of sources, vary in amount, and are available to both incoming and current STEM students. Below, you will find further information regarding the opportunities that may be available to you through the STEM College.
