Program Overview

The YSU Applied Geology program provides a field-experience-rich preparation for exciting and high-paying careers in the fields of Applied Geology. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in environmental geophysics, engineering geology, energy resource exploration, forensic geology and lapidary arts to name a few. The program provides opportunities for significant student experience in solving geological problems using a wide array of modern instruments not common to geology programs in our region or across the nation. Opportunities for employment as a geologist across the nation are commonly available and are well promoted through our internship and employment office.

The Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences offers two geology degrees; the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science. Both programs prepare graduates for employment, however, the Bachelor of Science is considered the flagship degree as its more rigorous curriculum provides significant employment advantages and prepares graduates for admission to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs.
