what does this program look like at ySU?

If you choose to pursue this degree with YSU you will graduate with a Bachelor of Social Work, which is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Foundational courses will include general psychology, writing, sociology, and communications. As you advance through your degree, courses will become more specialized. As an upperclassman, you will be able to intern with an approved social agency to establish field work credits that count towards your degree completion. Students have interned with a variety of different organizations through YSU, including Mercy Health, Family Service Agency, Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center, Park Vista Retirement Community and Trumbull County Adult Probation Department.

At the culmination of this degree, students will take an Integrated Capstone Seminar which synthesizes all previous coursework through theoretical and experimental assignments to prepare individuals for a successful career in their field.

what can i expect after graduation?

Most graduates of Social Work find themselves employed by family services, local government, ambulatory healthcare services, and state government. Common job titles can include child, family, and school social workers, healthcare social workers, and mental health and substance abuse social workers. For example, some of our YSU graduates work at organizations such as Gateway Rehabilitation Services, Riverbend Treatment Center, Coram Healthcare, and Homes for Kids Inc.

Projected job growth from 2021 to 2031 is around 9 percent, which is faster than national average, and in 2021 median pay was upwards of $50,000. Additionally, the highest 10% of social workers earned almost $83,000 as of May 2021. There is high demand for social workers, and the flexibility of this career path makes it an easy choice for many students.
