What Is It Really Like to Be a Nursing Student at YSU?

Being a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student at Youngstown State University (YSU) is about more than attending classes and clinical rotations. Through hands-on clinical experiences, supportive faculty, meaningful friendships, and professional networking opportunities, students gain the skills and confidence needed to become registered nurses.

For students like Natasha Sombie and Isabella Slaina, the YSU BSN experience extends beyond the classroom.

While Natasha highlights the value of faculty mentorship, clinical rotations, and professional growth, Isabella emphasizes the importance of peer support, friendships, and maintaining balance throughout nursing school.

Together, their experiences provide a glimpse into what it is really like to be a nursing student at YSU.

Why Students Choose the YSU BSN Program

Students choose the YSU Bachelor of Science in Nursing program for different reasons. For Natasha, an international student from Sierra Leone, finding an affordable program and a supportive community were important factors in her decision. She was drawn to the university’s welcoming environment and the close connection between students and faculty.

For Isabella, YSU’s strong nursing reputation and proximity to home made the decision an easy one. She had always heard positive things about the nursing program and appreciated the opportunity to stay close to family while pursuing her degree.

Learning Through Hands-On Clinical Experiences

One of the most valuable aspects of the YSU BSN program is the opportunity to learn through hands-on clinical experiences. Students apply classroom knowledge in real healthcare settings while working alongside experienced healthcare professionals.

Natasha shared one of her most memorable experiences during her Labor and Delivery rotation. The opportunity to witness families welcoming new children firsthand allowed her to see the impact nurses have on patients and families during important life moments.

“It was such a beautiful time to see children literally being brought into the world. I had tears dropping at some point.”

Clinical experiences go beyond passive observation. Students actively participate in patient care activities, allowing them to build confidence, strengthen their clinical skills, and apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations.

Finding Community and Support

One of the biggest surprises for many nursing students is realizing they do not have to navigate the journey alone. At YSU, students build friendships, find mentors, and connect with others who understand both the challenges and rewards of nursing school.

For Isabella, one of the most valuable parts of the YSU BSN program has been the relationships she has built with her classmates. Through study sessions, group assignments, and shared challenges, she found a support system that helped her both academically and personally. “It’s a nice bonding experience to know that you’re not alone,” she said.

Faculty support has also played an important role in Natasha’s experience. She described YSU nursing professors as approachable and invested in student success.

Beyond the classroom, faculty members provide guidance, mentorship, and professional support, including recommendation letters and networking opportunities that help students transition into their nursing careers.

Balancing Nursing School and Social Life

For many students considering nursing, one of the biggest concerns is finding a balance between school and personal life. Nursing school has a reputation for being demanding, which can make students wonder how they will manage classes, studying, work, and their social lives.

However, Isabella believes it is possible to find that balance. While she acknowledges that the program requires dedication and hard work, she encourages future students not to be intimidated by the challenges of nursing school.

“You have to study and do the work, but you can also have fun with it too,” Isabella said.

She explained that students can still maintain friendships, work part-time jobs, and enjoy their college experience while pursuing their nursing degree.

Advice for Future Nursing Students

Natasha encourages students not to be afraid to ask questions and seek help when they need it. She understands that starting nursing school can feel overwhelming, especially during the first semesters. “At the beginning, you may feel like you don’t know what you’re doing, and that’s okay,” she explained. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

She also emphasized the importance of time management, prioritization, and taking advantage of the support systems available throughout the program.

Similarly, Isabella encourages students to embrace the experience and not let the reputation of nursing school intimidate them.
